ISTA 3L Looks Across the E-Commerce Fulfillment Journey
ISTA 3L addresses handling through retailer fulfillment and final delivery. Case and package designers can use that route view to ask better test questions.
ISTA presents 3L as a generalized e-commerce retailer fulfillment test that considers hazards from receipt through outbound delivery. Its public overview identifies shock, vibration, compression and environmental conditions as relevant to the journey. The full protocol and applicability remain defined by ISTA.
Count the touch points
A package can survive a single drop but fail after repeated handling, storage and outbound movement. For durable cases sold with equipment, the shipping carton, case and internal support should be viewed as layers of one system. The expected e-commerce route should guide how each layer is tested.
- List fulfillment, sorting and last-mile handling steps.
- Check the packed product after the complete sequence, not just one event.
- Review damage data from real shipments to refine the design.
